Hạ Long Bay's Hidden Gem: OGO HL Homestay (2 Beds, GreenBay Garden!)

Hạ Long Bay's Hidden Gem: OGO HL Homestay (2 Beds, GreenBay Garden!)
Okay, buckle up, buttercups, because we're about to dive headfirst into the wonderfully chaotic and sometimes-a-little-wonky world of OGO HL Homestay in Hạ Long Bay. Forget the perfectly curated Instagram feeds – this is REAL LIFE review, unfiltered and brimming with genuine thoughts. And trust me, after spending a few days there, I’ve got plenty of thoughts.
First Impressions: The GreenBay Garden & That "Hidden Gem" Vibe
So, OGO HL. The "Hidden Gem" tag line? Well, it ain't lying. It's tucked away, which is great, because it's away from the relentless, touristy hustle of some parts of Hạ Long. Getting there? Easy peasy. Accessibility is decent: you can definitely take a taxi. ( Airport transfer is available too, which is a lifesaver after a long flight!). The exterior corridor gives you a bit of that motel-chic vibe, but hey, it's clean, and it works! The GreenBay Garden is beautiful, though… it’s not quite the hanging gardens of Babylon, but it's serene and provides a lovely backdrop for the whole experience.
The Room: My Sanctuary… Mostly.
Okay, let’s talk about the room. I had the 2 Beds option, perfect for a couple or a small group. The Air conditioning was a lifesaver – seriously, Vietnam gets HOT. And thankfully, the blackout curtains mostly worked, so I could actually sleep off the jet lag & get some peace. I'm a sucker for a good complimentary tea, and they had it! Nice touch. There's free Wi-Fi in all rooms, and it was pretty solid. I needed to do a little work, and the Internet access – wireless was reliable, unlike some places I've stayed. No complaints on the Internet access – LAN – well, I didn't use it, but it's there! And kudos for a desk; I actually like to pretend to work at a desk sometimes! The bed? Comfortable enough, though not the ultimate in luxury. My only real grumble? Like a lot of these places, the soundproofing could be better. I could sometimes hear my neighbors… um… snoring. But hey, what can you do?
Deep Dive into the Practical Stuff (The Boring Bits Everyone Secretly Wants to Know)
Now, for the nitty-gritty. Cleanliness and safety are clearly a priority. They've got all the COVID precautions in place - Anti-viral cleaning products, Daily disinfection in common areas, and Rooms sanitized between stays. I especially liked the Hand sanitizer dispensers EVERYWHERE. They really wanted to make sure we were safe here. And they had things sanitizing equipment! They even have Staff trained in safety protocol. First aid kit? Check. Doctor/nurse on call? Yup. They’ve got you covered there. The Security [24-hour] and CCTV in common areas provided some peace of mind. I like that.
On the amenities front, they’re pretty stocked. The Bathroom, included a hair dryer . There was a shower with decent water pressure. Plus, there were even bathrobes and slippers!! I felt fancy immediately. Daily housekeeping was prompt and unobtrusive. Luggage storage was convenient when I arrived early. There’s a safe box in the room for valuables: a must!
Food, Glorious Food! (Or, the Restaurant Adventure)
Listen, I came to Vietnam to eat. And OGO HL's offerings were… adequate… I’ll put it that way. The Asian breakfast was decent – your usual pho and fresh fruit. The Breakfast [buffet] was a bit small, but the fruit was good. There's a restaurant, and they have Asian cuisine in restaurant, Western cuisine in restaurant but the dishes were a bit hit-or-miss. One night I ordered a spring roll, and it was AMAZING, but another time the curry seemed a bit… bland. The Coffee/tea in restaurant was okay, nothing to write home about, and the Bottle of water was much appreciated. They have a poolside bar – I didn’t try it. I did, however, enjoy an A la carte in restaurant. It was fantastic!
Now, a word of advice: don't expect Michelin-star dining. But you will find something to eat, and it's all clean and safe.
Things to Do & Ways to Unwind: A Mixed Bag
Okay, so the swimming pool [outdoor]… it’s there! Perfectly fine for a quick dip, but not exactly the infinity pool of my dreams. I did spy a Pool with view, but you might need to crane your neck to get a good look at it. No complaints, though.
The spa has Massage, and that's really what sold me. After a day of sightseeing, a massage is just what I needed. (If you’re into that sort of thing, they had the whole shebang: Body scrub, Foot bath, and all that jazz). It was heavenly, and exactly what I needed after a long day of trekking!
They have some facilities for relaxation, but nothing like a Steamroom or Sauna or maybe even the Gym/fitness center
For the Kids (and the Kids at Heart)
Family/child-friendly is definitely true. I saw families enjoying themselves. They have a Babysitting service if you need it, too. I don’t have kids so… I can't tell you what that's like. They have Kids meal available!
The Extras: Services, Conveniences… and the Weirdness!
Okay, this is where things get interesting. The concierge was helpful with booking tours and answering questions. They even have a Currency exchange. They have a meeting/banquet facilities as well.
But here's where it gets… charmingly quirky. They definitely have a Gift/souvenir shop. You can also enjoy a nice terrace. I didn’t see the use of that Shrine and the Bicycle parking, though I really didn’t care to see them!
Things That Could Be Better (Because This Isn’t a Fairy Tale)
As much as I liked OGO HL, it wasn’t perfect. The décor is a little… basic. Think functional, not fancy. The Wi-Fi for special events might need some work.
The Verdict: Should You Book?
Okay, here's the brutally honest truth. OGO HL Homestay is a solid choice. It’s not a luxury resort, but it’s clean, safe, and the staff are super friendly. It's a great base for exploring Hạ Long Bay, especially if you're on a budget or just want a relaxed, low-key experience. If you're looking for a hidden gem, a place that's friendly, and a chill place to chill, then absolutely, book it.
My Anecdote: The Accidental Massage and the Unexpected Delight
Okay, here's one last thing. One afternoon, after a long day, I was just wandering around, heading back for the spa. I asked the staff for directions, got a little lost, and stumbled into the service area. The staff, bless their hearts, immediately offered me a complimentary foot massage, just to make up for the confusion. It wasn't the fanciest spa, but they offered a Body Scrub… And this turned into a hilarious, unscripted moment of pure relaxation. It was the perfect illustration of the OGO HL spirit: welcoming, accommodating, and a little bit… random.

Alright, buckle up, buttercups! This ain't your meticulously colour-coded, Instagram-perfect itinerary. This is the REAL DEAL, a messy-but-beautiful account of my impending chaos at the Homestay OGO HL in GreenBay Garden, Hạ Long, Vietnam. Let's dive!
Day 1: Arrival and the Great Laundry Debacle (and the First Pho Fix)
- Morning (aka, the Struggle is Real): Landed in Nội Bài International Airport (Hanoi) after a flight that felt like a lifetime. My luggage? Oh, it arrived. But my spirit? Pretty sure it's still somewhere in the clouds, wrestling with turbulence. Hopped on a pre-booked shuttle to Hạ Long. Google Maps said 3 hours, but let's be honest, Vietnam time often operates on its own beautiful, chaotic schedule.
- Afternoon: Check-in & the "OMG, Laundry!" Moment: Finally, after what felt like an eternity (and a near-nap on the shuttle), finally arrived at OGO HL. The pictures online? Gorgeous. The reality? Even better! The apartment itself is sparkling, the view of GreenBay Garden is mind-blowing, and I'm pretty sure I let out a little squeal of joy. But then… laundry. I'd been warned about limited washing machines in Vietnam. I'm currently staring at a massive pile of slightly-less-than-clean clothes, contemplating my life choices. (Maybe I should've taken the advice about packing light… nah.)
- Late Afternoon: Pho Salvation: Found a tiny, hole-in-the-wall pho place near the homestay. The broth was a warm hug, the noodles were perfect, and I swear, the owner looked at me like he knew I NEEDED this. A total culinary reset button. This is what I needed after the travel. I was so hungery, I had to order a second Pho.
- Evening: Sunset, Sipping, and Selfie Shenanigans: The balcony at the homestay is the real winner! Watching the sunset over the bay with a cold Bia Hanoi in hand? Pure, unfiltered bliss. Took approximately one million selfies, trying to capture the magic. (Spoiler alert: the pictures don't do it justice. This place is stunning.)
Day 2: Kayaking, Caves, and Cravings (and a Near-Disaster involving a Seafood Feast)
- Morning: The Kayak Adventure (and Almost Capsizing): Booked a day trip to Ha Long Bay. First up - Kayaking. I’m not the fittest person I know, so getting into that kayak was a workout in itself. I paddled out towards some caves…and the only problem? Steering. I went in circles, bumping into rocks, and narrowly avoided a full-on faceplant into the water. Locals were probably having a good laugh. But… the views were incredible! The limestone karsts rising from the emerald water… breathtaking.
- Midday: Cave Exploration and Wow Moments: Next, the Sung Sot Cave. It was gigantic, awe-inspiring, and felt like I was walking through the set of a fantasy movie. The lighting was amazing. The crowds? Not so much. Maneuvering through the throng of tourists was another challenge in itself, but totally worth the squeeze.
- Afternoon: The Seafood Temptation… and the Aftermath : The boat trip included a seafood lunch. Oh man! The seafood looked so fresh. I got overly eager and loaded my plate and after a couple of hours, my stomach started feeling like it was doing the tango. I decided to lie down on the boat and try to sleep it off.
- Evening: Sunset, Sipping, and Selfie Shenanigans. And the Tummy Tango continues: Back at the balcony. Another magical sunset. But the Tummy Tango? It was still there. Another round of selfies.
- Night: The Great Toilet Paper Shortage: Let's just say I made friends with the local convenience store, which was the only place open at 0200. I needed all the toilet paper!
Day 3: Markets, Motorbikes, and a Potential Culture Clash (and a Deep Dive into the Food)
- Morning: Market Mayhem and Breakfast Bliss: Hit the local market! Colorful chaos! The raw fish, the durian, the mountains of fruit I'd never seen before! Negotiating prices was a skill I was definitely lacking, but at least I tried. Breakfast? Banh mi from a street vendor. Flaky bread, savory fillings, heaven on a baguette.
- Midday: The Motorbike Misadventure: Thought I'd be adventurous and rent a motorbike. Mistake. Big mistake. I spent more time trying to keep it upright than actually going anywhere. I almost ran over a chicken (I swear it darted in front of me!). Decided to call it a day before I caused any major international incidents.
- Afternoon: Cooking Class Chaos (and Culinary Epiphany!): Booked a cooking class. The concept: learn how to make spring rolls from scratch. The reality: me, struggling with rice paper, and somehow ending up with spring rolls that looked more like abstract art than edible food. Still, the experience was priceless. And the food tasted incredible even with my clumsy hands. Food is my love language, and I am head over heels in love with food in Vietnam!
- Evening: Street Food Safari and a Battle with Chopsticks: Went on a street food tour. The pho was sensational. But this time I found my favourite food – Bún chả. I even bought a few extra ones and stored them in my tiny refrigerator to snack on later. Trying to master the fine art of chopsticks. Still a novice, but I’m improving (slightly).
- Night: "Lost in Translation" & the Karaoke Temptation: Attempted a conversation with the homestay owner about the weather and ended up discussing my undying love for spicy food. Translation can be hilarious! Luckily I resisted the urge to visit the nearest karaoke bar.
Day 4: Relaxation, Reflections, and the Reluctant Departure
- Morning: Sleep In and Balcony Bliss: Finally slept in! Bliss! Lounging on the balcony, drinking coffee, and soaking in the view. The perfect way to ease into my last day. I wished I could stay forever.
- Midday: Last-Minute Souvenir Scramble: Panic-bought souvenirs. Scarves, coffee, and way too many knock-off designer bags.
- Afternoon: Goodbye Embraces and the Next Adventure: Saying goodbye to OGO HL was harder than I thought. The apartment, the view, the peace and quiet… I’ll miss it all. Ready to move on to somewhere else!
Messy Musings and Rambles:
- Okay, so Vietnam? It's noisy, colourful, occasionally overwhelming, and absolutely magical.
- Embrace the chaos. Don't be afraid to laugh at yourself. Order the food in places you don't understand.
- Laundry is a constant struggle. Pack light. (I learned the hard way.)
- Bring earplugs. The traffic is relentless.
- Food is life. Seriously, prepare to gain a few pounds. It's worth it.
- This trip? Not perfect. But it was mine. And I can't wait for the next one!
